Photograph of the memorial to commemorate the death of Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French. There is a stone memorial cross engraved with the words - 'This cross is erected by Queen Victoria, in affectionate remembrance of Napoleon Eugene Louis Jean Joseph Prince Imperial, to mark the spot where, while assisting in a reconnaissance with the British troops, on the 1st June 1879, he was attacked by a party of Zulus, and fell with his face to the foe'. There is a pile of stones laid out in front of the cross and a low stone wall surrounding it. There is a larger wall on the grassy bank behind. Napoléon, Prince Imperial of the French served with the British army during the Anglo-Zulu War. He was killed in a skirmish with Zulu fighters in June 1879. Shortly afterwards his godmother Queen Victoria ordered a memorial to be built on the site of his death.
