Curatorial description (Accessed: 30 July 2019)
Photograph of the Winter Palace in St Petersburg. The palace has three storeys and a small central pediment with three arched doorways below. The windows are interspersed with pilasters and there is a balustrade and a sequence of statues on the roof. The Alexander Column is to the far right of the square in front of the palace. This photograph is from an album of handwritten and printed documents and photographs collected by Captain Oliver Montagu during the 1874 visit to Russia by the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. They had travelled to Russia to attend the wedding of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh and Saxe-Coburg & Gotha to Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna, the daughter of Alexander II.
