Photograph of a garden in Jalalabad. There is a pavilion with a veranda formed of a series of arches at the centre of the garden. In front of the pavilion there are two straight rows of trees to the left and a road to the right. Two Afghan soldiers wearing loose robes and turbans and carrying guns are standing on the path. Horses are grazing beyond the trees to the left. The photographer John Burke travelled with the Peshawar Valley Field Force during the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878-80), one of a series of conflicts between Britain and Russia over control of Afghanistan. His images from the war capture landscapes, key strategic sites and people involved in the conflict.

From the collection of King Edward VII when Prince of Wales
