Photograph of the interior of the White Tower in the Malakoff fortress. In the foreground there is a man standing beside a horse in a yard filled with weapons and building equipment. Behind is a damaged wall of the tower, with stairs to the left. On top of the wall soldiers are gathered around a tent with a triangular structure mounted above it. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on 8th September 1855. Lefevre photographed a number of strategic fortresses shortly after they had been abandoned by the Russians.
