The fifth child of William Nevill, 4th Earl of Abergavenny, Lady Augusta Mostyn took up photography as a young woman. She and her two sisters, Caroline and Isabel - nicknamed "the trio" by friends and family - may have been introduced to photography by W. J. Thoms (1803-1885). Widowed in 1861, Augusta was left to care for their two young boys. "Oak Tree in Eridge Park, Sussex" presents us with a view of the countryside that formed part of her father's estate in Sussex. It is possible that the woman seated next to the tree is Lady Mostyn herself (or one of her sisters) and the man could be Thomas Lloyd-Mostyn. This photograph was included in the Photographic Exchange Club's "The Photographic Album for the Year 1857".
