A glacis in military engineering is an artificial slope of earth in front of works such as fortifications, so constructed as to keep any potential assailant under the fire of the defenders to the last possible moment.

Despite being besieged and heavily bombarded by German forces, Belfort did not succumb until it was formally surrendered at the time of the general armistice. The buildings seen in the foreground of this photograph show some of the damage caused by the German bombardment of the town.

The latter part of the title refers ot the waterway which can be seen on the plain beyond the ruined tower. 'Un etang' in French is a pool, lake or mere.

Mount Salbert was a hill to the north of Belfort on which another fort was situated.
