X] Heliogravure / Photogravure Photoseed Photograph courtesy PhotoSeed.com Note: This plate has gone missing from Puyo's copy of the original portfolio. A similar view of this image has been substituted for this gallery. It comes from the journal "The Practical Photographer": London: Library Series No 16 (March 1905) (private collection) Alfieri (1860-1939), author of the 1893 title: "Half Holidays with a Camera" was a founder member of the British Linked Ring Brotherhood. A reference digital image was purchased and reviewed for research from the George Eastman House (we are unable to reproduce it at this time due to copyright restrictions) and features an unmanipulated "straight" sky in the original 1894 photogravure versus this halftone photographic reproduction from The Practical Photographer. The sky in this later 1905 photographic journal shows the photo was "re-worked." The Sun is more exposed here and three rays of light shoot heavenward from the clouds. Certainly, the effect has been achieved of a more "pictorial" looking photograph, which features the remains of an old ship. The photograph was taken on Breydon Water, near Yarmouth, in 1893. Included in the "Première Exposition d'Art Photographique" of the Photo-Club of Paris (1894) |

Fillon of the ateliers LeMercier & Cie, Paris. Anckorn's on tissue guard and Table des Planches. An advertisement in the Arbroath Year Book (1890): http://www.dmcsoft.com/images/tamh/graphics/artefact/arbroath/anckad1.jpg states that William Anckorn worked along with his wife as "art photographer & publishers…Under the Special patronage of Her Majesty the Queen, H.R. H. the Prince of Wales, and other royalty." This is most likely why the photograph in this portfolio has been given credit to Ankorn's versus a single photographer. Additional details on Ankorn's life come from: (http://www.dmcsoft.com/tamh/tour.php?tourid=15&page=2) Here, it states that: " W J Anckorn was a Town Councillor in Arbroath and a professional photographer. Many of the modern books on Arbroath gives his name as "Wilfred" but we have it on the good authority of his grandson that his name was, in fact, William John Anckorn. He took a large number of photographs of Auchmithie (and some of Arbroath) in the 1880s and 1890s, many of which he sold as postcards. He was, apparently, a livewire into his eighties and his party piece was standing on his head." Also: "Anckorn taught his son Bert photography and Bert taught his son Gordon, and both worked for newspapers in Kent, and Gordon has several books to his name on Norfolk and Sevenoaks. One of the current crop of offspring is also a professional photographer, so it has stayed in the family. - with thanks to Fergus Anckorn for additional information." Fillon of the ateliers LeMercier & Cie, Paris. Included in the "Première Exposition d'Art Photographique" of the Photo-Club of Paris (1894) Note: this very early Alfred Stieglitz photograph was taken in Munich, Germany in 1886. Known as "The Card Players", we learn more about this photograph from the introduction of volume one of "The Key Set" by Sarah Greenough and published by The National Gallery of Art: on page xv of the introduction from Volume One (1886-1922): "When Stieglitz visited the painter (Frank Simon (Sime) Herrmann ) in 1886 in Munich, Herrmann helped him stage a photograph, The Card Players, after Grutzner's (Eduard) hackneyed study of the same subject." A footnote to this information reveals more about the photograph: Footnote #40 (from page LII of the introduction) "Noting that The Card Players was "a genre picture like a painting by Meissonier or Zamacois," Charles De Kay, in "The Photographer as Artist," The New York Times Illustrated Magazine (4 June 1899), 7, stated that the players were three Munich students who had just returned from a costume party. Peter Hastings Falk in Frank S. Herrmann, 1866-1942: A Separate Reality (Madison, Connecticut, 1988), 10, identifies Herrmann as the figure on the right in The Card Players and Stieglitz as the one on the left. |

Craig-Annan (sic) Annan was elected to the Linked Ring in 1894. His father was the important English photographer Thomas Annan. This photograph, taken in 1893 is also known as "Evening Work" in Weston Naef: The Collection of Alfred Stieglitz, we learn the thoughts of Alfred Stieglitz when he was an editor for "The American Amateur Photographer" regarding this photograph: "We have seen but few pictures to equal that called "Labor-Evening" (called erroneously "Toil" in the last number of "The American Amateur Photographer"). The picture breathes of atmosphere, it is a piece of nature itself. We can give it no higher praise". (Biblio. 882, p. 213). (May, 1894 issue) Annan was a contemporary of Stieglitz - he was not only a gifted photographer but also a publisher who made his own copper plates for printing photogravures for himself and the family firm: T & R Annan & Sons. Today, the Annan family is still in business - operating The Annan Gallery (a fine art gallery) at 164 Woodlands Road in Glasgow. |

Included in the "Première Exposition d'Art Photographique" of the Photo-Club of Paris (1894) This intriguing photograph which translates to "The Prayer" was made by Count D'Assche, listed in the list of exhibitors of the 1894 exposition catalogue alphabetically as "Assche (Comte D'), château de Noailhac (France)." A web search revealed this unknown, yet gifted French photographer as either the occupant or owner (more likely) of the Château de Noailhac. Erected in 1850, the château "is situated in the department Tarn in southwestern France, just south of Castres, and 80 kilometers due east from Toulouse." The château grounds cover 27,000 square meters…16 people can rent out the château by the week. The Bordezon (sic) reference on the tissue guard is referring to Boissezon, a village near the château.
