"I lived with twelve people for nine years. We met in a community making workshop, and after one year of discussions we bought a large house together. In the beginning we held encounter sessions and discussed our relationships with one another; the goal of total honesty was rarely met, but we were good at having fun together. We built a sauna for twelve in the basement and used it nightly before festive dinners hosted by rotating cooks; we joked that whenever we wanted to see someone naked, all we had to do was invite him (or her) for dinner."

"Anne and I were a couple in the commune. We didn't believe in being possessive or jealous and enjoyed a satisfying relationship for two years. When we separated, we decided we were mature enough to stay in the house and deal with the difficult feelings surrounding new mates. Anne became involved with Mark, another man in the house. I became possessive and jealous."

"Yeye's sisters, Magda, Tota, and Manana, used to make me nervous. Every time I saw them, they were always laughing. I was afraid to talk to them and run the risk of not being considered funny."

"My first child, Lydia, was born when I was 47. I realized then that I had waited too long. When I held her in my arms, she was out of focus."

"Initially, I resisted the idea of wearing a wedding band, mostly because I had never worn a ring and I didn't understand jewelry, but when Carmen insisted, I agreed. After a while, I started to enjoy wearing the band: it reminded me of my new status as married and "grown up," a status I liked. I especially enjoyed tapping the ring on the roof of the car as I drove, to the rhythm of Cuban music. Two months after we were married, Carmen and I went swimming in Key Biscayne, and driving home afterwards I started tapping the roof and realized that the ring was missing. The following day, early in the morning when the water was calm, we went back to the beach. Finding the ring in water up to our chests seemed hopeless, and we gave up. One month later, at the same beach, we noticed a man in the water with a metal detector. Carmen suggested we gave him our number in case he found the ring, which had Carmen's name inscribed on it. That night he called. He said he had found it 200 yards from where I told him I'd been swimming, and one foot under the surface of the sand."
