Visankhukot, Nepal

I climbed the hill at dawn, walked through the trees (not noticing them at all), got to the top and looked towards the Annapurna Range. The mountain range I was looking for was a small, silver ribbon of light, much too far away to make an interesting image. Still under the dark cloth, I panned the camera around and literally fell backwards when I saw this image appear on my ground glass. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Lilliano is a wonderful, small Tuscan town. IKEA a Scandinavian homegoods company, recently made a poster of this image. I signed the contact, knowing I'd get a very small percentage of the wholesale price. I thought at best I'd be getting a few hundred dollars if the poster was marketed well. My first check arrived. It was for a little over $6,000! (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Although I made this exposure in 1971, I still remember that the temperature was -10¦F. It was not easy working with my old 8 x 10 Deardorf in such cold weather but well worth the effort. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Gelatin silver print / Fuji Crystal Archive print
16 x 20 in / 24 x 30 in

I have very few photographs from 1981. It was a year that I had a dry spell. This image, made with my 5 x 7 Deardorf, broke that dry spell. The next few months more than made up for the times when I did lots of work and had nothing to show for it. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Provided by the artist - Ron Rosenstock
I've been trying to find the spot where I made this exposure 25 years ago on Vinalhaven Island, Maine. Either the trees are long gone, or I've been searching in the wrong location. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

This stretch of beach is one of the most pristine in all of Ireland. Now it's off limits because the "contrary" farmer who owns the adjoining land put up a very sturdy barbed wire fence and no trespassing signs. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

This cottage in the west of Ireland lasted from before the great famine until just a few years ago. Where it once stood, there is a small grassy mound. It is as if the earth swallowed it up once it was no longer lived in. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Monument Valley is a much photographed place. I met this Navajo man who asked if I'd be willing to pay him to herd his sheep down from ear of the wind. It turned out to be a wonderful opportunity for me and the group I was leading. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Working with a view camera with slight wind is always a challenge. I was motivated by Edward Weston's dunes at Oceana. Edward Weston's dune images have been in my mind for fifty years. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)

Angel With Crossed Arms, Kilkenny, Ireland

Gelatin silver print / Fuji Crystal Archive print
16 x 20 in / 24 x 30 in

I remember photographing with my 8 x 10 Deardorf in Saint Canice's Cathedral in Kilkenny, Ireland. The sculptural form of the angel is, in reality, only five inches high, I had a lot of bellows extension and reciprocity. The exposure was two hours long. During the exposure the edges of the form on the ground glass began to glow. (Ron Rosenstock, Dec 2007)
