Barnabás Bosshart: Canela-Apanyekra, Maranhão, Brazil

Kindly provided by
Barnabás Bosshart

I dedicate this exhibiton to the Canela-Apanyekra of central Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, one of many forgotten Indian tribes, who live at the very edge of brazilian society, fighting for their daily survival.

In particular I would like to thank the Canela community, for their generous hospitality at the village and allowing me to photograph them over a number of months during my various visits in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

My special thanks go to

my “mother” Theresa "Kôhpa" (arm of river)
my “father” Felipe "Thoi" (bird)

as well as

Jogo-Canela and his family,

Jogo "Jogo" (small bird)
Lúcia "Hâco" (plant)
André "Krãcaprêc" (red hair)
Flávia "Prumkwyj" (small ant)
Gilberto "Harhi" (lower jaw)

and

Neusa "Hõjaren" (anything)
