Japanese artist Yuji Iwasaki is a graduate of Byam Shaw School of Art in London. While in school, Iwasaki was one of six finalists for the DLA Art Award. This corporate award considers approximately 1000 art students in the UK each year and selects a handful for an exhibition and inclusion in the company's art collection. Late in 2004, Iwasaki was included in New Photography at Sarah Myerscough Fine Art, London, a highly regarded gallery for emerging British artists. Iwasaki began as a sculptor and incorporates this earlier interest into his photographic work. He constructs models from clay, presenting amusing, enigmatic scenes, which he then photographs. Using the conventions of cartoons and children's literature, Iwasaki's richly colored images are immediately appealing and initially seem very familiar. Once drawn in, however, viewers finds themselves disoriented. The images lack the reference points and other features that would suggest a clear narrative. While creating the fundamental components of a fictional world, Iwasaki keeps the meaning of the work ambiguous, thereby encouraging viewers to find their own way.
