A self-educated man who was able to turn his talents to a range of ventures, tunnel building, surveying, the invention of a regulating device. He opened a photographic studio in Brighton, England in 1841 where his ingenuity was demonstrated by using a rotating platform for sitters and carefully controlled lighting.
