Noted for a series of 41 salted paper prints made using the calotype process of the conflicts in Rome during the summer of 1849. This was a tempestuous period in Italian history as democratic Republican forces with Garibaldi and Mazzini battled against the power of the Papacy only to be driven out by French forces. A set of the prints is held by the Biblioteca di storia moderna e contemporanea, Rome.
The Getty Research Istitute (Accession/ID Number 594112) has an 1849 album of forty-one salt prints by Stefano Lecchi, depicting the siege of Rome and its defense by Giuseppe Garibaldi, and ancient Roman monuments. It documents key battles in the movement for national unification known as the Risorgimento.
The photographs of Lecchi were used as the basis for multuple engravings.
