Sookang Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea in 1970. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting from Seoul National University in 1993, and in 1998 she graduated from Pratt Institute in New York City with a Master of Fine Arts in photography.
Kim Sookang creates lyrical gum-print still lifes from objects encountered in her daily life. As much akin to painting as to photography, Sookang's creative process involves laying multiple coats of pigment onto photographic paper using a single monochrome negative. The artist then carefully brushes the color, thinning it out in certain places and removing it completely from others, thus creating fine texture and accentuating shades. The accumulation of translucent layers gives body to each print; with each subsequent layer, the images gradually come into being. Each exposure mediates, as it were, an additional trace of the subject.
Kim has shown her work in her several solo exhibitions in Korea and numerous group shows in Korea and the USA. Her work is in both private and public collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston and Museet for Fotokunst in Odense, Denmark. She is represented by Gallery 339 in Philadelphia and Sepia International in New York and Paik Hae Young Gallery in Korea. Kim lives and works in Seoul, South Korea.
