His photographs were used to document the archaeological researches of G. Potanin in Central Asia. Following this he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg and during this time he participated in missions to East Turkestan.
In 1900 he was sent on a mission to Central Asia by Grand Duke Georgiy II taking over two thousand photographs. His collections of photographs, ethographic materials, and carpets are now in the Russian Ethnographic Museum, St. Petersburg.
