A key early figure in anthropological and ethnographical research along the Amazon in Brazil. He took photographs to support his research in 1884-1885 and 1887-1888 expeditions and many of his photographs are held by the Berlin Society for Anthropology, Ethnology and Prehistory and the Berlin-based Ibero-Amerikanisches Institut (Ibero-American Institute, IAI).
