Brought up in Paris and took courses in architecture. By 1936 he was committed to photography and in 1939 he arrived in Brazil where he lived for the rest of his life. He continued his interest in architecture and documented the construction of the capital Brasilia from 1958 onwards at the request of the architect Oscar Niemeyer. His archive of negatives is now held by the Instituto Moreira Salles in Rio de Janeiro.
