Michel Megnin, a specialist in Algerian photo-history, gives his full name as Joseph Augustin Pedra. He was active at Tlemcin in Algeria probably from around 1857. Tlemcin was an important tourist center because of its Roman and Arab ruins and Pedra took a large number of photographs. His photographs were reproduced in books as in the 1875 travel volume "Le Tour du Monde, voyage à Tlemcen" by M. De Lorral.
