In the early 1970s following a suggestion from John Lane, director of the arts centre in Beaford (Deven, UK) James started to record the rural life of the community with a scrupulous attention to detail resulting in a remarkable documentary record. He took over 80,000 black and white photographs of all aspects the community and the local area and made copies of 5,000 early photographs. This collection now forms the Beaford Archive.
