In 1866 he opened a photographic studio in Montreal and left there for Chicago in 1884. He authored the book "Artistic Lighting: To Which Is Added At Home Portraiture, With Daylight And Flashlight" (1897). His tragic contribution to photography was his death in 1904 in an explosion caused by experimenting with magnesium flash powder.
