Noted for recording the significant locations of the writer Henry David Thoreau in the vicinity of Concord, Massachusetts (USA). He also photographed existing and prospective national parks for the first director of the Park Service, Stephen Mather. The preservation of the glass negative archive by Roland W. Robbins saved this important collection from destruction and in 1975 the Sierra Club published "Thoreau Country" by Herbert W. Gleason.
