Born in Germany and immigrated to Mexico in 1891, married the daughter of the Oaxacan studio photographer, Antonio Calderón. Father of the artist Frida Kahlo. In 1891 he opened a studio in Mexico City and he carried out documentary studies for the Government on Spanish colonial architecture. He also photographed for illustrated publications including El Mundo Ilustrado and Semanario Ilustrado.
