Moved with his family to Aarau, Switzerland in 1902. Studied painting at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel until 1916. Military service, 1917-1918. Worked as a painter in Basel and Geneva, 1919-1920; in Munich, 1920-1926, his first exhibition was in 1922. Returns to Switzerland in 1926. Makes his first photographs in 1927. Photographs freelance for the Zürcher Illustrierte and publishes also in such magazines as, Vu, Paris-Match, Berliner Illustrierte and LIFE. Travels in 1938-1939 to Sumatra, Java, Bali. Is the first picture editor for the Neuen Zürcher Zeitung, 1941-1960. Founds in 1951 with fellow Swiss photographers, W. Bischof, W. Läubli, P. Senn and J. Tuggener, the Kollegiums Schweizerischer Photographen. Receives a Gold Medal in the Biennial in Venice in 1957. Is named Cavaliere by the Italian government in 1967.
His archive at the Fotostiftung at Winterthur contains 50,000 negatives and contacts and around 300 prints.
