Swiss, he was in Rio de Janeiro from 1832 publishing lithograph albums. By the late 1850s he published albums assembled from other photographers' material. In the 1860s began taking his own photographs and exhibited in Paris 1867 "Exposition Universelle". Around 1865 he hired German photographer Albert Frisch to cover Amazonian Indians. Leuzinger studio became a well-known publishing house including lithographs, typography and engravings based on photographs.
