In 1856 he obtained a Daguerreotypist licence in Prague. From 1857-1860 he was in the USA and then returned to Prague where in 1862 he opened his own photographic studio. Business appears to have been good as he opened branch studios in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Mariánské Lázne (Marienbad) and in Teplice (Teplitz). In 1867 he was awarded the Austrian Gold Medal for Art and Science (Goldene Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft) for his album Erinnerung an Prag. He went on to become one of the leading landscape photographers of Austria-Hungary.
