The son of an actor he took up the same profession without ever becoming a star. Turning to photography he set up as an art photographer in San Francisco before returning to Manhattan after the 1906 earthquake. His was innovative, taking up a Pictorialist approach to the photography of actors and the use of high speed technology. He ran a film processing company and also took up cinematography moving in 1920 to Hollywood where he worked as a still photographer in the movie business.
