Born: 1850 - US, MA, Needham Died: 1913 Gender: Male Active: US
American scientist, inventor and photographer. Within photography he is best known for his work on high speed photography in the 1880s and 1890s when his focal plane shutter was capable of 1/1000 to 1/2000 of a second at a time when commercially available shutters could only achieve about 3/100 of a second. With these shutter speeds he could capture fast moving objects and people such as pigeons, horses, trains, athletes and bicyclists. His photographs of tennis players were used to illustrate James Dwight's book "Practical Lawn Tennis" (1893) and he also took high speed images of golf players.
The Massachusetts Historical Society has a collection of his photographs.
