Born: 1967 - The Netherlands, Amsterdam Died: Gender: Female Active: Europe / USA
Elsbeth Struijk van Bergen is an Amsterdam-based photographer whose portraiture tells a universal story, while focusing on the individuality of her subjects. Archetypal environments, expressive of the modern, industrial or domestic landscapes that frame everyday life, form the reductive backdrop for her chronicle of the human experience. The subjects are always the focus, more sharply present against the man-made backgrounds they inhabit. Austere and yet captivating the intimate nature of portraiture, her images are at once still and emotional.
Part of a wave of female photographers who emerged in The Netherlands at the end of the 20th Century, Struijk van Bergen graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She is the recipient of multiple grants, and her work was published in Visionaire's Fashion 2000, edited by Alix Browne (Rizolli International), and in Desire, edited by Patrick Remy (Steidl). Her series Dames van Zuid / Faces from the Beethoven Straat (Ladies from Southern Amsterdam) was published as a standalone publication (L.J. Veen Publishers). Notable recent projects include a commission to photograph a newly restored residential Gerrit Rietveld project, resulting in the publication Rietveld's Robijnhof (Thoth Publishers).
