Obtained a medical degree from Strassburg (1879) and specialized in dermatology with Oskar Lassa (1849-1907). Between 1884-1886 he carried out research on leprosy and microbiology at Father Damien's Molokai isolate for lepers, Hawaii. He was Physician-in-chief, Allgemeines Krankenhaus St. Georg, Hamburg (1906-1923) and Professor of dermatology, University of Hamburg (1919). He was also keen amateur photographer with his photographs included in pictorialist publications including Die Kunst in der Photographie.
A collection of 237 of his glass plates was discovered by Dr. Adrienne L. Kaeppler in the Hamburgisches Museum fur Volkerkunde in 1994 and these were used to create a set of the prints that is housed in the Edward Arning Collection at the Hawaiian Historical Society (www.huapala.net).
