Born in England he moved to Australia in 1863 and took over Meluish's studio in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1864. He concentrated on landscapes of New Zealand from 1869 and toured Australia with a lantern slide show "Maori Land or Through New Zealand with a Camera" (1873). In 1874 he showed his lantern slides in England.
