Daisy K. Smith was a music and drawing teacher at primary schools in England from 1906 until 1948. During that period many teachers were involved in the Educational Puppetry Association. The making of puppets and dolls was a part of the education program. It was during this period that Smith became a very active amateur photographer using the camera as a means to record her unusual puppets. The glove puppets and the marionettes are nothing special as objects per se, but they are photographed in such a wonderful and loving way that the passion Smith had for her art becomes very clear. What is so particularly arresting and moving about Smith's work is the strong surrealist imagery that her work conjures up. Her works are very fine and unique examples of what many would consider outsider art.
