She was given a Kodak No. 0 Brownie camera on her 10th birthday and remained a photographer from that point on working in South Africa, and England where she apprenticed with Madame Yevonde and in Germany at the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt fur Lichtbildwesen (Bavarian State Institute for Photography) in Munich. During the Second Wold War she photographed South African forces fighting their way through Italy and the Liberation of Paris. After her marriage in 1949 to Colonel Sterling Loop Larrabee she moved to Chestertown in Maryland, USA, and documented the Eastern Shore. Her work combined pictorialist and modernist elements.
In 1997 she donated her African images to the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of African Art, her World War II pictures to the Corcoran Gallery and her views of the Eastern Shore to the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.
