Bernhoeft was a portraitist and has invented a procedure called Sanssouci to realize portraits with artificial (magnesium) light. He also published albums with collotypes about Luxembourg, Germany (especially the Rhine valley), the Netherlands, Alsace and the Universal Exhibition in Antwerp in 1894.
