The studio founded by Addison Scurlock and was continued by his sons Robert (1916-1994) and George (1919-). They captured the lifes of a rich and diverse black middle-class community as it became increasingly segregated. They recorded key events with Robert photographing Marian Anderson's performance at the Lincoln Memorial after she was denied the stage at Washington's Constitution Hall.
The Scurlock Studio Collection of some 250,000 negatives and 10,000 prints became a part of the Smithsonian Institution's archives in 1997.
