At midday on 4th February 1939 the troops of the 4th Navarre division entered Girona, under the command of General Camilo Alonso Vega. On the same day 700 people were arrested and locked up in prison, thus beginning a period of harsh repression that continued on 8th March with the first executions by firing squad that would usher in more than 40 years of dictatorship.
