Peter Welling
1850 (ca)
Two girls

Daguerreotype, hand-tinted
8.2 x 6.9 cm

National Galleries of Scotland
Acc. No. PGP R 9

(Curatorial caption, accessed 23 November 2014)
This daguerreotype has been hand-coloured with dry paint to stress the relationship between the two girls - they are presumably sisters, wearing the same dresses and the same coral necklaces. Welling has executed this portrait in the American tradition with the sitters staring straight out at us. There are no softening shadows, favoured by European photographers.
