[Eternal memory]
Gelatin silver printProvided by the artist - Carl UytterhaegenEternal Memory
Death and religion -next to freedom, love and social engagement- are the two main concepts which form an essential part of who I am and which are crystallized in this photo essay called "Eternal Memory". I have worked on this essay since the beginning of the seventies. Cemeteries are for me, on one hand, symbols of transience and, on the other hand, an expression of the cultural and religions identity of mankind.
This series of photographs shows my, interpretation of the Concept of the cemetery and also the historical and documentary value of the photographs, the latter being of utmost importance to me.
My itinerary included over, a thousand Cemeteries and brought me to the following countries : Belgium, France, England, Wales, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Mexico, Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Austria, Soviet Union, Malta, Romania, Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Madeira, Chile and the U.S.A.
