Cowboys Off the Range, Possibly Including Cowhand E.C. "Teddy Blue" Abbott
Tintype, 1/2 plateCowan's Auctions, Inc12/7/2012- American History: Live Salesroom Auction, Lot: 300
An exceptional half plate tintype portrait capturing a group of ten rough-and-tumble cowboys, who appear fresh off the range. Many wear chaps, and three are armed, two with Colt single action revolvers and one with an M1875 Remington revolver. Housed in a thermoplastic frame featuring a floral design, 7 x 8 in.
A wonderful, casual pose.
It has been called to our attention by a knowledgeable customer that the cowhand in the lower right corner of the tintype might be E.C. "Teddy Blue" Abbott, author of
We Pointed Them North: Recollections of A Cowpuncher, and son-in-law of famed cowman Granville Stuart. He appears to be wearing the same shirt, hat and neckerchief as in a famous tintype of him taken in 1879 (see
We Pointed Them North, p. 17), though the clothing and his hair seem to be a little the worse for wear. This may be an indication that the tintype offered here was taken later on in a drive or after a couple days carousing in town.
