On All Hallows Eve every one goes to visit the tombs of their dead friends, and decorate them with immortelles. On this day the streets are quite deserted, and the roads leading to the Campos Santos are crowded. Few graves are left without a chaplet; on many of them you see a photograph of the deceased hanging in the centre of the tablet. I must confess this way of burying seems to be a most comfortless one ; the cemeteries look so like a shop, and so dreary, and I cannot help feeling that some day the walls will crumble away and leave all the bones exposed.
