After transferring the mouth from the poet's hand to a statue (played by Lee Miller) the statue speaks.
 
In a lecture Jean Cocteux gave at the debut of "Sang du Poet" at the Théâtre du Vieux-Colombier, January 1932 he said:

Miss Miller has pale eyes, but at some moments in my film she has dark eyes. I painted these eyes on her eyelids. I did not do it for aesthetic reasons, nor to make her look like a mask of Antinoe. I painted them because, when she is blind, she behaves as though she is blind and as one doesn't realize on the screen that her eyes are false, this behavior adds to the unreality of the character.
