Carlo Bevilacqua, Il Maestro, 1986, cover
Bevilacqua began his career as a photographer in 1942 and became one of the most respected and exhibited of Italian post-war photographers of the international salon movement, especially in the 1950s/60s; the era of post 'pictorialism'. Bevilacqua's work has been described as both 'neorealist' and 'subjective'. He was also noted for his mastery of black and white printing techniques, which influenced many photographers, including Fulvio Roiter, Mario Giacomelli and Paolo Monti. In the UK, his style and approach has been compared to Bill Brandt's. Since his death, he has continued to be exhibited in Italy, and published in anthologies of contemporary Italian photography.
