Printed from a negative taken by Barry in Bismarck in the 1880s, a highly desirable image of the Hunkpapa Sioux chief.
Sitting Bull (1831-1890), whose Lakota name was Tatanka-Iyotanka, was both a chief and a holy man. He led the Lakota Sioux in their struggles for survival on the Northern Plains. Throughout his life, Sitting Bull distrusted the federal government's promises and treaties. He was killed shortly before the Massacre at Wounded Knee in December 1890.
