Stereocard Paul Frecker Alfonso XIII (1886-1941) was King of Spain from the moment of his birth, his father having died the previous November of tuberculosis. When the time came for him to marry, the choice fell on Princess Victoria-Eugenie of Battenburg, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria. The marriage took place in Madrid amidst incredible pomp on 31 May, 1906 and was attended by a large number of European royalty. As the newlyweds were travelling towards the Royal Palace, an anarchist by the name of Mateo Morral threw a bomb concealed in a floral arrangement at the couple‘s carriage. The bomb rebounded into the street, killing some of the Royal guards and many of the crowd. The carnage was gruesome and the bride‘s dress was splattered with blood, but the king and his new queen were unharmed.
