Tom Crean (1877-1938) was born in The Dingle Peninsula, in Ireland. In 1901 he joined Scott's 'Discovery' Expedition as a volunteer Able Seaman. He was employed by Scott again in 1910 as Petty Officer for the 'Terra Nova' Expedition. He was disappointed not be included in the party that made the final ill-fated push to the South Pole. He later was involved in Shackleton's 'Endurance' Expedition and one of the party to make the epic open-boat crossing of Drake's Passage.
