This daguerreotype is one of the oldest photographic views of Boston. Taken from the photographer's studio window on Tremont Row, the daguerreotype shows the stores along Court Street and, in the middle ground, the Old State House. Fort Hill, which was levelled in 1868, can be seen in the far right background. The vertical scratch on this daguerreotype was probably caused by a metal clamp in one of Southworth & Hawes' storage boxes.

The view also includes the Old State House; Tudor's Building; the American Traveller Building (newspaper); S. Klous, hat shop at 27 Court Street; Henry Prentiss, music and umbrella shop at 33 Court Street; and Charles A. Huckins, hat shop at 49 Court Street.
