Venice, view of the Basilica of San Marco

Daguerreotype
National Science and Media Museum
Part of the Ellis group of daguerreotypes, Inventory no: 1890-56-V8bis

Landscape view of the Basilica of San Marco from the Piazza San Marco. Three flagpoles are seen in the piazza with the facade of the basilica behind, consisting of a series of five elaborately decorated archways, the central entrance archway dominant with the four horses above, with smaller arches on each end. Five further arches rise above, the central arch also more embellished, this has a window. The skyline shows the many pinnacles, statues and domes that constitute the roof decoration. Part of a house is seen on the left, and to the right part of the doge's palace. In the foreground are small booths at the base of the campanile.
