Custis, a descendant of Martha Washington, was a painter who also pursued photography as an art. She traveled to N. Africa in the early 1930's, and many of her most prized paintings are based on N. African scenes. This a very rich pictorialist photograph, with deep dark tones in the archway. It is signed by the artist on the print, and again on the overmat. On the verso of the backing is her imprinted label with the title and process.
