The completion of the first transcontinental railroad in Promontory Pont, Utah was one of the most signficant events in American history, marking a focus on western expansion that would continue well into the 20th-century. Representatives from the Union and Central Pacific railroads are in attendance as well as local dignitaries and workers. To properly commemorate the occasion, the last spike tying the rails was made of solid gold.
