Juan Laurent n.d. La Cartuja (Burgos). Sepulcro de los Reyes D. Juan II y Dª Isabel de Potugal
Cabinet card Biblioteca Nacional de Espańa (Alan Griffiths, 29 April 2025) The Tomb of King John II of Castile (1405–1454) and Queen Isabella of Portugal (1428–1496), located in the Cartuja de Miraflores monastery near Burgos, was commissioned in the late 15th century and completed around 1489. The tomb was sculpted by the master Gil de Siloé, one of the most celebrated artists of the Spanish Gothic period, under the patronage of their daughter, Queen Isabella I of Castile ("Isabella the Catholic"). Executed in polychromed and gilded alabaster, the tomb is an outstanding example of late Gothic funerary art, blending elaborate architectural forms with richly symbolic religious iconography. Its octagonal design, fine detailing, and intricate program of heraldry and angels reflect both dynastic ambition and deep devotional piety characteristic of the Catholic Monarchs’ era.
