Notes: Photograph of a dead Egyptian soldier on the battlefield of Tel el-Kebir. The Egyptian army occupied a strategic position between Alexandria, the Suez Canal and Cairo. The British army under the command of Major General Sir Garnet Wolseley (1833-1913) launched a successful dawn attack on 13 September 1882, effectively ending the war. Hippolyte Arnoux was a commercial photographer of French origin working in Egypt (1860-1880). He was based in Port Said, and was therefore well-placed to document the building of the Suez Canal, the work for which he is perhaps best remembered.
